Because that's the sort of thing that has happened a good chunk in my life due to travelling.
I lost my tape of Barenaked Ladies' Gordon in 1995 around New Year's at Lisa's New Year's Gathering. Was a good time though I got lost in rural Va. I remember that we were discussing the Spice Girls as they were on Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve and we were much saddened.
I lost my cd of the Squirrel Nut Zippers the one that had "Hell" on it while going to Hyannis, MA. to see Jen around 2002. I was taking the bus from Boston and put it in the seat in front of me while I was listening to my cd. Of course, I forget it when I got off of the bus.
I've lost or thrown away a mix tape that had parts of Sinead O'Connor's I do not want what I haven't got on it, Gene Loves Jezebel's "Jealous" somewhere in my moves. I remember liking it.
Somewhere around 1996 I left my copy of Patricia Wrede's Snow White and Rose Red in a cab in upstate New York coming back from either a friend's house or the bookstore. I hadn't read it yet which is the most tragic part of it. I now know her stuff from the Dragons Series, but I didn't at the time. I had gotten it because I always liked the story and there was an Elizabethan element to it. The kicker is that it's not been re-released so availability is nil so they are asking 60 bucks for a mint hardcover version. Mine was not that good. It was a paperback. I hope it found a good home.
I lost my copy of Louise Erdritch's Love Medicine when I was up in Ithaca taking the GRE's circa 1998 and I bought another copy because I was halfway through it. It's woah intense. It's the last one of hers I've read.
Most of my books are accounted for if they are elsewhere. I've got a list of whose books I have and where mine are. I've started doing this with DVDs now, which kinda scares me. I don't think that there are any major edits video-wise yet. Or if they are, they've been so for a while. I think I threw out the MST3k version of The Magic Sword before I left New York as the tape was dying. I kinda regret that now.
Then there are the books that have come back to me. I left my copy of Gaudy Night at the computer lab once in college as I believe I was writing down nice love quotes from it. (I was 22 and in the stupid throes of lust/love whatever). Lo and behold, the object of my desire in fact found the book as I believe he also was working there that night so I got it back on Sunday. I still have the book. It's the one I brought with me to Germany and I read while listening to Kate Bush's Hounds of Love on the trains in 1987. The cover is definitely worn. Granted, it was a small college so it's not quite as cool as leaving it on the subway and the fabulously cool dude shows up at the coffee shop with it. And yes, those of you who know the college crush I refer to can roll their eyes collectively.
That's the only one that occurs to me now, but there are probably others.
