The segue whiplash known as catalogs.
In the mail yesterday, I received the following catalogs, Eddie Bauer, Design Within Reach, West Elm, and the Music Stand. Obviously, my name has been sold by Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel, or Signals. Basically, Design within Reach's mission statement is to provide designer stuff but with a more reasonable cost. And I use reasonable with a heavy dose of sarcasm. Clearly, they think I have way more money than I do and that I live in a loft somewhere. Okay, I did want to move to New York and live in a loft when I was fourteen but consider it was the 80s and that's what all the television characters seemed to be doing. So it seemed like a good plan. Their style reminds me of Trading Spaces terribly much. Look at their sofas. The Nelson Marshmallow couch. No, no, and no. (The designer is no relation)

West Elm is much like DWR though less pricey. They have some funky things that I like that will not work in my apt. Or anyone's apt. with spillable liquids, pets, children, or clutter. But they have some set ups that I just like. I like the diamond jacquard stuff and it would scarily go in my bedroom. Because I have the dark woods that go.

Eddie bauer is self explanatory. The Music Stand can be best described as "What do you get your musical friend if you have absolutely no inspiration whatsoever?" Why, get them a totebag with their instrument on it? Or suspenders with music scoreds on them. Or hey, instrument cork-toppers for their wine? Or hey a t-shirt that say, "Here Comes Treble? " Or Martini glasses with a keyboard around the goblet? I know my life is empty without it. I just know that many, many music teachers or band leaders have tons of this stuff in their closets. Along with multiple copies of "Mr. Holland's Opus." Some of the stuff is nice, but some of it's kitsch for lack of a better term. I _do_ like some of the Oz stuff and it's nice that they have a good collection of musics, not just classical, not just rock, but a mix of everything. They also have Mozart and Beethoven paper dolls which are wicked cool.

Barb, we have DWR in Philly. They have a store on Walnut near Rittenhouse, but I when I passed by I didn't understand what they sell. It's like they don't want me to know-- I thought they were an actual design service.

I don't get nearly so many catalogues just Crate and Barrel, Ikea, William-Sonoma
